Counsellor
Part time: 22.5hrs per week (Tue/Wed/Fri OR Wed/Thu/Fri)
Based in: Cottesloe – supporting clients in South/West Metro areas
About Us:
Breast Cancer Care WA is a grass-roots WA charity funded entirely through generous donations and fundraising in the community. Our specialist breast care nurses and counsellors support people during their experience with breast cancer by providing practical, financial and mental health support.
About the role
Our counsellors play a crucial role in offering counselling and group-based support, helping clients navigate emotional distress and relationship challenges during their breast cancer experience.
Key Responsibilities:
Counselling:
- Provide counselling to clients and families experiencing psychosocial distress related to breast cancer
- Identify at-risk clients and unmet needs across the breast cancer continuum
- Use evidence-based, person-centered trauma-informed interventions including ACT, CBT, mindfulness, and grief counselling to support clients
- Provide self-management coping strategies and evidence-based resources to support clients
Group Facilitation:
- Lead age and stage-specific support groups
- Develop and deliver therapeutic workshops addressing common client issues
Networking and Community Involvement:
- Establish collaborative relationships with allied health professionals at breast cancer treatment centres and in the local communities
- Advocate for clients within health systems and participate in community events
OHS and Professional Development:
- Engage in clinical supervision and adhere to health and safety policies
Key Success Indicators:
- Adherence to counselling and support group guidelines
- Effective collaboration with team members and allied health professionals
- Identification and referral of complex cases for specialised care
- Maintenance of comprehensive electronic client records
Skills and Experience
Essential Selection Criteria:
- Tertiary Counselling qualification
- Membership of a professional peak body
- Experience in counselling life-limiting illnesses
- Well-developed personal stress management skills
- Proficient database (salesforce) and record keeping skills
- Positive, flexible and proactive team player
- Current WA drivers’ licence
Desirable skills:
- A sound knowledge of women’s health & breast cancer
- Knowledge of the WA health care system and community resources
- Experience working in a multidisciplinary team
- Experience in therapeutic program development
- Couples Counselling certification
