Making memories last!

Imagine strolling through a cemetery and hearing a mobile phone ringing! Not unusual you say except you’re all alone! It’s crazy I know but it seems the idea of being buried with your mobile phone for company is catching on!

One chap was so terrified of being wrongly diagnosed as dead, he had to have his phone close at hand so that he might alert those up top if he regained life!

The wife of another buried her husband with his mobile phone and inscribed his phone number on the headstone. His wife and others, took delight in calling his number to listen to his voice mail reply… "Hi, this is John. After the beep, leave a message and I'll return the call." There’s no news of any returned calls.

The ringing sound coming from the burial plot gave grave-diggers and cemetery strollers a scare or two but at least his wife found her husband’s voice helped her hold on to his memories a little longer and for as long as the battery lasted.

It’s oddball I know but it brings a focus to other ways to keep memories alive, ways that are more lasting and that benefit others not yet born…

The best way is to write a Will. Imagine for example, if Harry, a teenager, were to write his Will… “I want my brother James to have my skateboard, my best friend Tim to have my iPad, Mum can have my cash and sister Kate, my bike.”  For his age and his assets, this is an appropriate Will.

Of course, there is a deal more to the writing of a Will but the key points are that everyone young and old, should have a Will and update it every year. In the case above, if Harry died with no Will, Tim could not get Harry’s iPad because he’s not family. If there is no Will, others decide who gets what and it may not be to your liking to be sharing assets with distant relatives you’ve never ever met.

Last, is to remember Breast Cancer Care WA, help us continue doing what we do so well by leaving a bequest in your Will. If you need help or advice to write your Will, we can assist in referring some services which may be free to close friends and generous donors like you.
