Become a volunteer

Volunteering can be a very rewarding experience and at Breast Cancer Care WA, we recognise the incredible value volunteers bring to our organisation.

Without our volunteers we could not offer practical support to our patients or present our many fun and successful fundraising events that help fund our organisation.

How do you become a volunteer?

To become a volunteer, simply complete the online registration form by clicking on the volunteer today button and we will contact you as soon as possible.

Once you are a registered volunteer, we will keep you up to date with volunteering opportunities.

Volunteering roles at Breast Cancer Care WA

Practical assistance and/or transport for patients

Our practical assistance volunteers provide hands-on help to our patients. This can involve driving someone to their medical appointments, helping them with basic home duties or just being good company by taking them out for coffee when they need a friend.

Practical assistance volunteers must attend an induction, receive basic training and have a police clearance.

Event and fundraising volunteers

Event volunteering is often a suitable option for those who work full-time as most events are held on weekends. Whilst event volunteering can be tiring and volunteers often spend many hours on their feet, the role is fun and generally involves helping with a variety of tasks at large community events. So if you like meeting people and having fun, this could be for you!

Our major fundraising events are;

  • Celebration of Women - Long Table Lunch
  • Purple Bra Day
  • Purple Pyjama Party
  • October raffle

Administration volunteers

Often in the weeks leading up to our major events, we require volunteers with office skills to assist with general office duties.

Peer to Peer support

When supporting someone through a breast cancer journey, it can be helpful to match them up with a peer who has been through a similar experience. If you or a loved one has been through breast cancer and you are willing to support someone currently affected by breast cancer, please call us on 9324 3703.

Our expectations of you

  • To represent Breast Cancer Care WA in a polite and professional manner at all times
  • To be reliable, efficient, and punctual
  • To maintain confidentiality
  • To take reasonable care of your own health and safety while volunteering and that of others who may be involved in your activities
  • To respect other volunteers and paid staff, and to promote a pleasant and friendly environment

What we can offer you

  • Recognition as a valued member of our organisation
  • Adequate insurance coverage
  • Reimbursement for out-of-pocket expenses
  • Support from your volunteer coordinator

What are the benefits of volunteering?

  • Sharing  your skills and talents with others
  • Meeting  new people
  • Knowing  you’re making a difference
  • Increasing  your skills and knowledge

Who are our volunteers?

Many of our volunteers are retirees who want to put some of their new found free time to good use; are breast cancer survivors who want to give back the care they received; and full-time employees and students who enjoy the opportunity of volunteering during weekend events.

Please note: All volunteers must be 18 years of age or over

Time and commitment

We understand the need to be flexible as people’s lives are very busy. Depending on the role you have accepted, it may require a level of time and commitment and this will be discussed during your interview.

What skills and experience do you need?

In general, volunteers need to be easy-going, flexible with time, able to follow instructions easily and above all, caring and willing to help others.

What training and support will you receive?

Ongoing volunteers involved with our practical assistance will receive an induction and work closely with the volunteer coordinator and services team.

Event and fundraising volunteers will receive an orientation at each event which is aimed at introducing them to the organisation and the purpose of the specific event.

A volunteer’s policy and procedure handbook is also provided.

Employee volunteering

Corporate Social Responsibility Programs are becoming more and more popular as organisations recognise the benefits of engaging their employees in helping to make a difference in the community.

We welcome the opportunity to discuss how we can include your organisation as part of our volunteer program.
